This Hawker Typhoon Mk. IB, cruising over the West Country of England on August 24, 1943, has a number of patched areas on it, indicating modification work. After serving with several squadrons, it was lost in action on February 24, 1945. Operational pilots found the same series of problems which dogged [the aircraft] in testing. The engine remained difficult to start, had terrible vibration characteristics and was prone to catch fire. The tail section tended to come off under stress, possibly due to elevator flutter. Nevertheless, pilots said it was quite an aircraft when it worked, particularly rugged, able to withstand a significant amount of enemy fire. Excerpted by permission from WWII War Eagles, p. 160.
