
Converted from a Mk. IVD, KZ193 was one of three
Hawker Hurricane Mk. V tropical tank-buster prototypes undergoing performance
trials at Brooklands on August 11, 1943 with one 40mm Bofors cannon under
each wing. The 1,700 hp Merlin 32 and a four-bladed propeller were a help,
but the massive guns dropped the fighter's top speed to a miserable 286
mph, so the variant was canceled. Excerpted
