Though not as fast, at 380 mph, as other top-level
American fighters, the F6F Hellcat carried the standard excellent American
firepower of six .50 caliber Browning machine guns and had that legendary
Grumman "Iron Works" rugged-as-a-bridge construction. In just two years
of combat the Hellcat shot down 5,221 enemy aircraft, a record second only
to the P-51 Mustang.
